Saru Gupta – Embodied Leadership

Oprah once quoted ‘You’ve got to follow your passion – You’ve got to figure out what it is you love – who you really are. And have the courage to do that. I believe that the only courage anybody ever needs is the courage to follow your own dreams.” Please share, how you had the courage to follow your own dreams.

Tell us what the word “Entrepreneur” means to you?

What has been the biggest lesson you have learned from being an entrepreneur?

This is my second entrepreneurial venture, and I’ve learned moving to self-employment doesn’t immediately solve problems. I’ve had to learn to self-lead my life, and I struggled with this the first time around. Don’t leave a career thinking life gets better somewhere else, unless you’ve truly looked inside yourself first.

What inspired you to start your own business, and how did you go about identifying a need in the market that your business could address?

10 years ago, I needed the embodied leadership support I now offer to others. I was high-achieving, yet struggling.

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, clients from the corporate and medical world showed up needing my help. My mother’s death changed me, and I’m compelled now to help others.

What is your favourite quote about “following your dreams”?

I have heard this quote many times over the last eight years during my silent meditation trainings –

“What is it you plan to do with your one precious and wild life?” by Mary Oliver.

Yet it never hit me at an embodied level until last year.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business?

Take a whole-self leadership approach so you can run your business without burning out. We’re constantly bombarded with external stimuli beyond our control, and we need to cultivate an internal mastery over our body, emotions, nervous system and mind so we’re not shaken by life as a leaf in the wind.
