Hello, my name is Emma, and I used to be desperately unhappy working for corporate. I was a trainer for a superannuation call centre (government business), and the morale was low (they were trying to sell it). It was a toxic environment with lots of gossip and uncertainty. I had been there for 9 years and recently had left an unhappy marriage too. The short story to this is that I studied fitness and Zumba! came along. This allowed me to leave my job with glee, and I started helping people improve their lives. I now am a hypnotherapist doing even more than that!
As an successful entrepreneur please share your view point if you believe that entrepreneurs are born or made?
It’s vital! Initially, the people around me weren’t keen on me having my own business and following my passion and purpose. In fact, they told me to get a job. As a result, those friendships naturally fell away to me hanging out with business owners and people who had taken direction with their lives. I learnt early on that you are the average of the five people you hang out with – so I increased my average (and still do!).
Nelson Mandela once quoted – ‘I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.’
What has been one fear you have overcome?
Where do I start? Fear in following your purpose goes hand in hand! If I was to name one fear I have overcome was leaving my fitness business (due to illness) and starting life coaching – essentially starting from scratch in my mind. But with my new found resilience I blew it out of the water and even took it all online.
Tell us what the word “empower” means to you?
Empowerment to me means staking a claim to my life and making decisions that suit my values, beliefs and goals.
What has been one of the biggest business ideas you have had and how did you have the courage to implement it?
It was turning my face-to-face clients to groups online. I did this before it was a thing – around 7 years ago, I started building online groups for coaching and self-development. This meant I had to learn how to build the platform (amongst other things), market the courses and also run them. I think it was my third online course/group meant that when I was at the top of the Eiffel Tower on a 6 week holiday that my Paypal kept ‘dinging’ and I knew that I had done the right thing! How did I get the courage? I backed myself and my skills!
Running your own business can be scary. Success requires moments of courage to push through to the next level, please tell us one of the moments you have had to push through to take your business to the next level?
It’s interesting, the word ‘courage’ hadn’t occurred to me throughout me leaving corporate. I just did what I thought was necessary to get where I wanted to be. I had learnt after my marriage exit that fear was always going to be around, you just had to dance with it! Writing my first book was terrifying, yet I knew it could be done and would take my business to another level. Putting my words out in the public domain to be scrutinised was hairy, scary and exhilarating at the same time.
Tell us what attributes you feel make a good leader in business today?
A good leader in my mind is a bit like the lighthouse analogy. Standing strong on the shore, guiding the ships to safety. Not chasing or following them to shore. Shining brightly and guiding. So, essentially leading by example.
What is your favourite quote about empowerment?
If you can dream it, you can do it
– Walt Disney
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business?
Get clear on what you want to do.
Take all the advice you can but go with your gut.
Be prepared for people to give you their opinions (without asking for them), and be prepared to smile and say thanks. Then again, go with your gut.
Ask yourself, who do I need to be? Rather than what do I need to do… the ‘be’ will create the ‘do’ anyway.
Be prepared to back yourself 100% because no one else will… also make sure you celebrate the wins.
What would be one (1) question you would you ask the person who most inspires you? Also share with us about this person and why they inspire you?
‘Can I come hang out on Necker Island?’ to Richard Branson.
Richard Branson inspires me as I know that, naturally he is an introvert, and I have seen how nervous he is on stage. So his ‘normality’ assures me that if he can do it, so can I.
