Kate Toon – From The Backyard Shed, Masterminded A Business Universe

I’m Kate, a dog lover, hula hooper and crisp eater. I’ve always enjoyed writing and now I make my living by writing daft posts on Social media (according to my son) but in reality I have small business owners demystify the weird and wonderful world of Digital Marketing through courses, memberships, podcasts, books, events and more.

Oprah once quoted ‘You’ve got to follow your passion – You’ve got to figure out what it is you love – who you really are. And have the courage to do that. I believe that the only courage anybody ever needs is the courage to follow your own dreams.” Please share, how you had the courage to follow your own dreams.

Tell us what the word “Entrepreneur” means to you?

What has been the biggest lesson you have learned from being an entrepreneur?

Not to compare myself to others. I know this might sound trite. But oooooh the hours I wasted trying to be what I thought was a ‘proper entrepreneur’, all glossy locks, white teeth and pencil skirts.
As soon as I started focusing on my super powers, rather than oggling other peoples’, things really started to take off.

I may not be for everyone, but being my true self is much more enjoyable.

What inspired you to start your own business, and how did you go about identifying a need in the market that your business could address?

Ah I’d love to tell you had a blinding epiphany. But the truth is I got pregnant, had no chance of parental leave, so had to jump ship and start a business at 5 months pregnant.
The first 3 years were a case of doing whatever to make money, it wasn’t until about year 4 that I saw my niche (seo) and year 6 that I moved into passive income projects.

What is your favourite quote about “following your dreams”?

My favourite quote is ‘Hell is other people’ Jean-Paul Sartre

But that aside I’m not a dreamer. I’m a doer.
That sounds harsh but I think my biggest skill in business is thinking up an idea (or dream) but then very swiftly turning it into action. And also being able to survive the dreams that turn into nightmares.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business?

Get a good accountant. And after that, be really honest with yourself. Think about your why, are you in it for the money, to help people, to fufill a passion to work less. There’s no wrong answer here, but you must remember your why as it’s going to be challenged every step of the way.
